A third platform for Laburnum station and bike path along the railway line

The Middleborough Road Rail Separation Project will provide welcome improvements for train services on the Box Hill line by removing the level crossing at Middleborough Road. Motorists will benefit from reduced traffic congestion too.

However, the Project has not consulted adequately with local residents in the Box Hill and adjacent Laburnum districts, resulting in two key improvements being overlooked.

Firstly, the current proposal will see all trains on a new middle track express through Laburnum station with no option of stopping. This will greatly reduce train service options at the station. As the station will totally redeveloped this will be an opportunity missed. An island platform would solve this problem, as it would allow some services to stop. It should be provided.

Secondly, the proposal does not include a bicycle path. There is room on the north side of the new rail route easement to accommodate a high quality bicycle path that could connect existing bicycle trails adjacent to the line with a possible Eastern Rail Trail that would allow bicycle rides to safely travel from Blackburn all the way to Yarra Trail in Richmond.

We need bicycle paths that are convenient and safe to use for both commuting and for shorter local trips. Bicycle riders, especially children, would also benefit from being able to ride their bikes away from the dangers of busy roads.

Improved community consultation and a more holistic approach to improving urban transport are required.
